Plans to sign with San Antonio

The Scoop:Paul intends on joining the Spurs after being waived by Golden State ahead of free agency Sunday. The 39-year-old pro averaged 9.2 points, 6.8 assists and 3.9 rebounds in 26.4 minutes per game over 58 contests last season. Paul will join a Spurs team that was experimenting with many different options last year at the point guard position and provides an intriguing dynamic with rising star Victor Wembanyama.

Released by Warriors
Released by Warriors

The Scoop: The Warriors likely did not intend to pay Paul the $30 million they would have owed him if they guaranteed his contract. The club pushed the guarantee date back in order to see if they could find a trade partner for the veteran point guard; however, that clearly did not happen, and Paul was released. The 39-year-old averaged a career-low 9.2 points, 6.8 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 1.2 steals across 26.4 minutes last season.

Contract guarantee date pushed back

The Scoop: If the Warriors guaranteed Paul's contract for 2024-25, the veteran would earn $30 million next season. Golden State can't afford that price and doesn't want to lose Paul in free agency for nothing, while the point guard likely agreed to this so he'd get a say in where he's potentially traded. Wojnarowski relays that the Warriors are still exploring trades, but what type of market Paul has at this point in his career remains unclear. He averaged a career-low 9.2 points per game in 2023-24.

Heads back to bench
Paul isn't in the starting lineup for Tuesday's Play-In Tournament game against the Kings, John Dickinson of 95.7 The Game San Francisco reports.

The Scoop: Stephen Curry will replace Paul in the starting five Tuesday after missing Golden State's previous contest with an ankle injury. Paul is averaging 8.2 points, 5.4 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 1.1 steals in 23.3 minutes across his last 10 appearances coming off the bench.

Playing, starting Sunday
Paul (hamstring) is good to go for Sunday's regular-season finale versus Utah and slated to start at point guard.

The Scoop: Paul's hamstring tightness is seemingly not an issue following pregame warmups, so he will give it a go. The veteran point guard could see a heavier workload than usual due to Stephen Curry (ankle) being sidelined.
