 Agrees to 3-year extension

The Scoop:The extension includes a player option for the 2027-28 season. Mitchell's future with the Cavaliers has been a major storyline in the media for well over a year, so Cleveland will be relieved to secure Mitchell's signature as they move into a new era with coach Kenny Atkinson at the helm. During the regular season in 2023-24, Mitchell averaged 26.6 points, 6.1 assists, 5.1 rebounds, 1.8 steals and 3.3 three-pointers.

Extension expected this offseason
The Cavaliers are confident in reaching an extension with Mitchell (calf) this offseason and will soon present the five-star All-Star guard with a four-year, $209 million maximum contract offer, Shams Charania, Joe Vardon and Jason Lloyd of The Athletic report.

The Scoop: Mitchell's current contract runs through the 2025-26 season, but because he holds a $37.1 million player option for that season that he would almost certainly decline, the Cavaliers are eager to strike a long-term deal with him rather than risk losing him in free agency next summer. On a related note, the Cavaliers are eager to hire an offensive-minded head coach who values ball movement to get the most out of Mitchell, with the report noting that the organization has narrowed down its search to Warriors assistant Kenny Atkinson and Pelicans associate head coach James Borrego, both of whom have previous head-coaching experience with the Nets and Hornets, respectively. Mitchell missed the final two games of the Cavaliers' Eastern Conference semifinal round loss to the Celtics with a left calf strain, but he's expected to be fully healthy well in advance of training camp in the fall.

Ruled out for Game 5
Mitchell (calf) has been ruled out for Wednesday's Game 5 in Boston, Spencer Davies of SI.com reports.

The Scoop: Mitchell will be joined on the sidelines by Caris LeVert (knee) and Jarrett Allen (ribs), leaving Cleveland quite thin going into a potential elimination game. Expect big minutes for Max Strus, Dean Wade and Sam Merrill, with Darius Garland and Evan Mobley doing the heavy lifting on offense.

Unlikely to play Wednesday
Mitchell (calf) is officially listed as questionable for Wednesday's Game 5 against the Celtics, but he's not expected to play, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.

The Scoop: Mitchell has been spectacular in the playoffs and averaged 35.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.0 steals in 41.0 minutes over his last six appearances. However, he picked up a left calf strain during Game 3 and was sidelined for Cleveland's Game 4 loss. If Mitchell is unavailable again, Caris LeVert (knee) would likely start next to Darius Garland in the backcourt, while Sam Merrill may see an increased role off the bench.

Iffy for Game 5
Mitchell (calf) is listed as questionable for Wednesday's Game 5 against the Celtics.

The Scoop: Mitchell is in danger of missing his second straight contest due to a left calf strain he suffered in Game 3. Caris LeVert started in Mitchell's absence Monday and played well but aggravated a lingering knee injury and is also questionable for Game 5.
