The Timberwolves signed Hill to a two-year contract last season, but only the first year was guaranteed. He was slated to make $4.18 million next season and the team faced a Friday deadline to decide on retaining Hill.

The Scoop:Hill only played seven games last season and averaged 1.7 points and two rebounds. Since entering the league as a first-round pick of the New York Knicks in 2009, Hill has career averages of 7.9 points and 5.8 rebounds in 409 regular-season games with the Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers, Houston Rockets, Indiana Pacers and Timberwolves.

Minnesota Timberwolves coach/president of basketball operations Tom Thibodeau and GM Scott Layden took a conservative approach to free agency in their first days running the team last year, and it essentially backfired on them. Their signings of Brandon Rush, Jordan Hill and Cole Aldrich were duds, and the team operated below the salary cap, leaving cash on the table. They're clearly switching strategies now, landing Jeff Teague on a four-year, $57 million deal on the first day of free agency and targeting JJ Redick and Paul Millsap as well. It was pretty clear that the Wolves got a commitment from Teague in conjunction with their trade of Ricky Rubio to Utah, a move that opened $33 million in

Last summer, the Minnesota Timberwolves took a $4 million flier on veteran big man Jordan Hill, hoping he could give them some backup minutes behind Karl-Anthony Towns. Cole Aldrich was better (though not great), and so in the draft the Timberwolves took Justin Patton hoping he can give them some minutes next season. Which means Hill’s time in Minnesota has come to an end.
