 Staying in Denver

The Scoop:Cancar played with Slovenia during the FIBA Olympic Qualifiers, and he looked healthy after undergoing surgery in August to repair a torn ACL in his left knee, an injury that caused him to miss the entire 2023-24 campaign. In his last healthy season with the Nuggets in 2022-23, Cancar appeared in 60 regular-season games and averaged 5.0 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 14.8 minutes. He should add depth to the Nuggets' frontcourt, though he shouldn't be relevant in most fantasy formats.

Struggles from deep in loss

The Scoop: Cancar missed the entirety of the 2023-24 season after undergoing surgery in August to repair a torn ACL in his left knee. The Nuggets declined his team option ahead of the 2024-25 season, but they have not ruled out re-signing the 27-year-old. Moreover, his return to game action with Slovenia bodes well for his stock in free agency. Cancar appeared in 60 regular-season games in 2022-23, during which he averaged 5.0 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 14.8 minutes.

Bound for free agency
The Nuggets declined Cancar's (knee) $2.35 million team option for the 2024-25 season Sunday, Bennett Durando of The Denver Post reports.

The Scoop: Cancar will thus be eligible to begin negotiating with teams as an unrestricted free agent beginning July 30. The 27-year-old missed the entire 2023-24 season after undergoing surgery in August to repair a torn ACL in his left knee, but Cancar is expected to return to game action for the Slovenian national team in a 2024 Summer Olympics qualifying tournament in July. According to Durando, the Nuggets haven't closed the door on re-signing Cancar on a minimum contract. During his last healthy season with Denver in 2022-23, Cancar appeared in 60 games and averaged 5.0 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 14.8 minutes.

Not expected to play in 2023-24
The Nuggets aren't expecting Cancar (knee) to play at any point during the 2023-24 season after the team applied for a Disabled Player Exception from the NBA prior to the Jan. 15 deadline, Vinny Benedetto of The Denver Gazette reports.

The Scoop: No reports have indicated that the Nuggets' request was approved by the NBA in the nearly three months since the team filed the application, but it nonetheless confirms that Cancar won't be available for the tail end of the regular season nor Denver's postseason run after he tore the ACL in his left knee in mid-August while playing for Slovenia during an exhibition game in Greece. Cancar acknowledged as much in an interview with Grant Afseth of SI.com in December, when the 26-year-old forward noted that he has turned his focus toward getting healthy for the upcoming summer, when he hopes to resume playing for Slovenia in the 2024 Olympics in Paris if the national team qualifies for a spot in the tournament. Cancar noted in the interview that he's been able to resume running on the court since undergoing surgery on his knee, but it's unclear what he's been able to do in terms of basketball activity in the ensuing three-plus months.

Undergoes surgery
Cancar underwent surgery surgery on his left knee Thursday and is out indefinitely, Vinny Benedetto of The Denver Gazette reports.

The Scoop: Cancar tore his ACL in an exhibition match against Greece while playing for the Slovenian national team in early August. Cancar may miss the entire 2023-24 campaign, but he saw limited playing time for Denver last season, so the Nuggets rotation shouldn't be impacted by the forward's absence.
