 Contract guarantee date extended

The Scoop:The Hawks and Fernando decided on a similar move prior to last season, and ultimately the center's contract was guaranteed. If the club decides to guarantee his salary this season, Fernando is set to make $2.7 million this upcoming year. The 25-year-old was a non-factor in the first half of 2023-24; however, after the All-Star break he saw an uptick in minutes, during which he averaged 7.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.4 assists across 19.3 minutes.

Retreats to bench
Fernando will come off the bench for Wednesday's Play-In Tournament game against the Bulls, Lauren L. Williams of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

The Scoop: Fernando drew the start in the final game of the regular season but he'll retreat to the second unit since Clint Capela (rest) is back in action. While it's assumed Atlanta will trim down their rotation, Fernando should see upwards of 20 minutes Wednesday.

Reaches double figures in start
Fernando contributed 12 points (3-5 FG, 6-6 FT), two rebounds and one assist over 21 minutes during Sunday's 157-115 loss to Indiana.

The Scoop: Fernando got the starting nod with Clint Capela (rest) sitting out the regular-season finale, ending as one of four Atlanta starters and five players with a double-digit point total in a losing effort. Fernando started his second game of the season Sunday, his first that ended with 10 or more points. He rounds out the regular season by posting 11 double-digit scoring outings.

Starting sans Capela
Fernando will start Sunday's game against the Pacers, Dustin Dopirak of The Indianapolis Star reports.

The Scoop: With Clint Capela (rest) sitting out the regular-season finale, Fernando will draw a spot start. In his only start this season (Feb. 14 versus Charlotte), Fernando posted six points, 12 rebounds, an assist and a block in 26 minutes.

Scores career-best 25 points
Fernando posted 25 points (11-14 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 3-4 FT), six rebounds, one assist and one block over 26 minutes during Saturday's 132-91 victory over the Hornets.

The Scoop: Fernando reached a new career-high scoring mark in this one, and the big man is certainly making the most of the opportunity with Onyeka Okongwu (toe) sidelined. However, this was a one-game outlier, and he's not expected to hover around the 20-point plateau -- let alone the 10-point mark -- off the bench going forward, as he remains a backup with little shot at a starting role any time soon.
