The Celtics announced Monday that they have signed Pierce to a contract so the 10-time All-Star can retire with the team he spent his best 15 seasons in the NBA with. Pierce helped bring a championship in 2008 as part the ''Big Three'' of Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen.

The Scoop:Drafted by Boston at No. 10 in 1998, Pierce started a 15-season run that is behind only John Havlicek's 16 seasons for the most played in a Celtics uniform. The 39-year-old retires atop the franchise's lists in 3-point field goals (1,823), free throws (6,434) and steals (1,583). He is also Boston's second all-time leading scorer with 24,021 career points, trailing only Havlicek.

Stop us if you’ve heard this before: The Boston Celtics lost because of abysmal shooting. For literal years, reliable perimeter shooting has been an issue, and they really didn’t do anything this offseason to help their cause. Boston drafted Vanderbilt sharpshooter Aaron Nesmith with the 14th overall pick, but it’s unfair to expect him to step in and rectify an issue that’s long predated him.

The Celtics thought they were laying a foundation for seasons to come when they brought in All-Stars Al Horford, Kyrie Irving and Gordon Hayward in back-to-back summers in 2016 and 2017. Four years later all three are gone, the latest failed attempt by Boston to construct its first championship team since the Big Three of Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen led the Celtics to a title in 2008. Now just three months after making a run to the Eastern Conference finals in the Florida bubble, Boston is shifting its attention and hopes to its youthful core as it prepares for a fresh start in the new season.

Ray Allen knows a few things about playing as part of and alongside a so-called Big Three in the NBA, winning championships with Boston in 2008 and Miami in 2013. The “He Got Game” star chimed in Monday on the possibility of the Nets adding former MVP James Harden to Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, saying such an arrangement could be “amazing” but also has a chance to be a “train wreck” in Brooklyn.

James Harden wouldn’t make the Brooklyn Nets a super-team. In fact his arrival might derail the whole effort. Former Boston Celtics star Ray Allen argued that point Monday during his appearance on Sirius XM NBA Radio.
